About Me - Steve Meikle

40 years in the cycle business, owned and run Royston Cycles since 2009. Keen leisure cyclist , unfortunately running the shop and keeping everyone else on the road limits my leisure time.

My working life has always been around the cycle trade.  Started part time back in the New Forest back in 1974 in a small cycle shop and moved up to Saffron Walden in 1976 where i started my first full time employment and still going.

Shop Local

Why shop at a locally owned business first.

  • Shopping local creates jobs. - Shops in our town create local employment and self-employment. These people in turn spend in the local community.

  • Local independent shops invest more in our communities. - Local businesses are proportionately more generous in their support of local charities, schools and community events. Supporting local shops means a financial impact on your community.

  • Local shops sell a wide range of great products at affordable prices. - Many people fall out of the habit of shopping locally and are then surprised by the range of products and gifts available.

  • Shopping local saves you money. - Out of town shops have done a good job of convincing us that local business equals expensive. If you add travel, fees to transfer items and your time, the overall cost is often much higher. Shopping local retains our communities. People don't like losing shops and services in small towns but don't equate this to how they spend their money.

  • Local shops are for everyone. - Most people can get to their local shops easily and this is especially important for the elderly and young generations and those without transportation.

  • Local shops value you more. - Evidence from numerous surveys show people receive better customer care and service locally. These businesses survive by their reputation and repeat business, which means you get a higher standard of service.

SO SHOP SMART. SHOP LOCAL.

Choosing the right bike

choosingtherightbikeThere are many types of bicycle available, each with a different purpose and range of features.

If you are new to cycling - or returning to the saddle - it can often be a bit daunting making the right choice from the growing number of options and price points on sale.

Royston Cycles is the best source of advice and information to assist you in making the right decision and of course nothing can substitute sitting on a bike and giving it a test ride to decide if its right for you before you buy.

Choosing the right size

Adult bike sizes are normally measured from the top of the seat tube (where the seat post fits into the frame) down to the centre of the bottom bracket axle (the axle which carries the pedal cranks).

With the correct frame size you should be able to sit on the saddle with your feet on tip-toes touching the ground on either side, and you must be able to reach the handlebars comfortably.

It is sometimes worth considering a smaller frame with the saddle raised slightly in order to obtain a more comfortable reach. The sizing chart below gives a guide to frame sizes against inside leg measurements.

The correct way to measure your inside leg is from your crotch to the floor making sure that your feet are flat on the ground.

You need to be sure what size bicycle you require before purchasing. Read our sizing guide and more details about the right bike.
